PREP
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
A new HIV prevention approach where HIV-negative individuals use Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, HAART to reduce their risk of becoming infected.
What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It's a method for HIV-negative individuals to reduce their risk of getting HIV from sex or sharing needles.
Daily Protection:
Truvada and Descovy: These medications are taken as once-a-day pills and are highly effective in preventing HIV when used as prescribed. They work by blocking the virus's ability to replicate in the body. Both medications offer a convenient and discreet way to stay protected.
Long-Acting Protection:
Cabotegravir: This recently approved option is an injectable medication that provides extended protection against HIV. Unlike Truvada and Descovy, Cabotegravir is administered as a shot every two months, eliminating the need for daily pills. This extended-release injection may be a good choice for those who prefer a less frequent dosing schedule.
How well does PrEP work?
These medications when taken as prescribed, significantly reduce HIV risk. However, consistent use is crucial. The level of protection might decrease with missed doses.
PrEP protects against HIV only. It does not prevent other STIs or pregnancy. Condoms are still recommended. PrEP is not a cure for HIV.
Who does PrEP work for?
PrEP is effective for various groups, including:
- Gay, bisexual men
- Transgender women
- Heterosexual men and women
- People who inject drugs
Studies like iPrEx, Partners PrEP, TDF2, and Bangkok Tenofovir Study support PrEP's effectiveness.
